Well, this is what I have to show for my first project in Hammer, for garry's mod. It's titled "rp" but that's only because it most resembles an rp map, I don't actually even know how to role play in gmod. Anyways, the map is divided into two parts, both of which are rather large to accommodate construction areas and a ton of buildings to play around in. The general theme of the map is based off the cities Carmel and Monterey in California, but I've added canals for more water areas. The map is split into two sections. One is a more industrial side, with the ware houses and adjoining factory. The other will be primarily apartments, pubs, and other restaurants. The two areas are divided by the large canal. Okay well that's enough writing, on to the pictures. This is my first map, so bear in mind it isn't great. Also I think I made a mistake when creating the garry's mod hammer section today, because all my entities have disappeared. So just... pretend that entities are there, and that they look fabulous. Overview of the map, it's big enough however that some is missing from the picture. The warehouses/wharf thingys. I've never actually seen a map with a sky bridge that you could enter, so I made sure to include some here. Warehouse interiors. Another warehouse interior... i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/kienzle/map4.jpgWhat I have of the residential side. Okay, comments and critiques are much appreciated.

Nice and large. It would be 10000 times better if those were in game screen shots.

I would, but the info_player_start entities have become "obsolete" whatever that means. So I can no longer spawn...

Wow, the way you made that bridge and the concrete river thing is alot like one of my maps. It looks good, but if that is a finished map I think it could use more detail.

Lol Rusty, it's nowhere near being finished. It's not going to be on par with maps like, say, evocity, but it will certainly be better than it is now. Anyways the current build wasn't compiled for longer than it should have been, so there are a TON of bugs. So many I hardly know where to start, in fact. I had pictures of the big ones today but xfire deleted them for some reason... I will take new pictures and post them up here tomorrow. Also thanks for the inspiration pics, Rusty.

Okay, prepare for a really long post. So many problems, 3 big ones- lighting, weird map replica in the sky, and the biggest one, the "wtf" syndrome... I'll start out with that one. Um, what? Next up we have the fact that the 3d skybox has been replaced with a replica of the map, hanging in the sky. Which actually looks cool, in a perverse way. You'll see more of it later. Onto the water, which isn't working. This is a big problem but is kind of outdone by the other errors. You should not be seeing buildings here. There is a brush, the tops of which you can glimpse, that should be the side of the canal. I think that is the skybox showing through? The weird line, also visible in the above picture. It's where one water brush hits another one... should I not be doing that? Now we come to the lighting. No idea why these aren't work, they were set up by a friend and I copied what he did in other places. Other lights in the map work fine, the ones I set up, but the ones he made do not. Here is an example of that. I can see, but the ceiling is black?! Here is another place, this time inside the factory. Lighting does not work. The building that will one day become the fisherman's pub. This may be because there is no direct lighting on that black side there, or is it something else? In some places of the map, a small twitch in viewing direction will cause lighting to change drastically. A step or two in one direction, or just viewing it a bit differently, causes things to change. Here is one example. And here is another, in the sky-bridge. Oh, and here is a place where the door to the pub opens strangely. Just to show you that the map (maybe?) has promise, I have included some better pictures, that show the map closer to how it's supposed to be. .... and that's all. Again this is my very first map, that's not an excuse for shitty work, just the reason there are so many glitches at this stage. Also, please tell me if you think I should just abandon this map, or continue it.

You have an actual HOLE in your skybox... if you have a skybox at all.

Okay, I don't -think- there is a leak but I'll go look for one.
EDIT: The pointfile didn't find a hole, to my knowledge. It just goes through one of the brushes that make the skybox.
I'm very confused.
EDIT: Messed around with the skybox and deleted the 3d skybox. No more "town in the sky" and the strange sky error now are fixed. I won't put pictures up unless people want to see the changes.

Did you put a hollow skybox block around your normal map?
Also, replace those textures that change brightness with other ones with out 'model' in their name.

I've had this problem when I forget to delete the original sky_camera that I made as a reference. and as Philip said delete any textures that have "model" in their name / directory.

Philip- yeah, I made a hollow 3d skybox.
Also, I replaced all the model textures and things are working MUCH better now. Thanks a ton guys.
I'm working on a shady, black market type shop currently. I'll post some pictures when it's done.
Also Rusty- I tried to layer textures with the "paint alpha" tool, but the option was unavailable for some reason.
