Unfortunately as I was making my uber-kickass map that dominates everything any of you could possibly imagine, I ran into a problem: I don't know how to make ladders. D:
The Hammer for HL2 is just gay like that I guess, I was trying to make a map where when you spawn you need to climb up to a roof and jump along the houses to get the guns and beneath you Combine were killing some Rebels just sittin' near some barrels and then you jump in and they're like "F*** you." And you're like, "No...
... ... ... F*** YOU."
And then you get dead 'cause the Combine are some pretty cool guys who doesn't afraid of anything.
ANYWAYS
Does anyone know how to make ladders for HL2?

The Hammer for HL2 is just gay like that I guess, I was trying to make a map where when you spawn you need to climb up to a roof and jump along the houses to get the guns and beneath you Combine were shootin' some B-Ball just upside the school, and you'll have a couple of rebel's who'll be up to no good, starting making trouble in your neighbourhood, you'll get in one little fight and Alyx'll get scared, so you'll be movin' with your aunt and uncle to Nova Prospekt. FIX'D On a more serious note, I'll look into this later.

I know 3 ways to make ladders, you can make a brush that looks like a ladder, then press Ctrl + T, and make it a func_ladder, You can use the invisible ladder brush infront of your ladder, or make a nodraw infront of a\ ladder and give it func_ladder.
I've never mapped for HL2, but, Im pretty sure one of those will work.

For half life 2 you need a func_useable_ladder (this won't show up so put a model NOT touching it behind it) and place info_ladder_dismount (or info_dismount, this is off the top of my head) around the base of both the yellow squares on the func_usable_ladder entitie. For detail on this open lockdown.vmf and look at the ladders in there. Looking at the included maps is a great way to learn how to do something.

yes, actually that's a good approach to learn the tricks of building things, as many seem simple and obvious in the mind, but not so simple and obvious when it comes to make them real in Hammer.
But, there's one thing I'd like to know: When playing Lockdown and afterwards Lockdown_r3, I noticed some diference in the ladders... like if the ladders in the _r3 version were easier to get attached to, climb, and get detached from.
Is there any difference between the ladder contruction of these two maps?
(Because that's one thing I hate about ladders and maps with ladders in possibly crowded places, as it gets too annoying to die because you couldn't climb that stupid ladder or because you got stuck after climbing it (jumping solves that, but not always and sometimes not the way that's expected). And if there's really a diference and the ladders from _r3 are less buged, I want to know that diference.)
I could just go and take a look but I'm not in the mood to go use vmex to decompile _r3 right now. Maybe later.

There was an old way of doing ladders and it was replaced with a better, easier way... maybe it was that.

So... I've compared both lockdown and lockdown_r3 and... They're just the same.

Probably just your imagination about the ladders, then

Probably just your imagination about the ladders, then Mmmmm, ladders. My imagination run wild every time I think about them.

I think it must be that I was doing something wrong in lockdown and did it right in lockdown_r3 and got that impression... the only explanation I can think of.

I copied a ladder once, it was complete with everything. It had all the stuff Corigami was talking about prefaed for me, but I have never been able to find it or the tutoral I got it from. When I copied it to another level of mine it was invisible. Strange

Okay, perhaps I missed a memo, or something, but when did making a ladder for HL2DM become any different than making one for CSS? It's still Source! Bleagh. Here's a link: sdknuts.net/tutorials/wiseladder.asp
