Hope someone can help. When i add the skybox (which is completely around the map) i can see the skybox from outside the map. When i go inside the map in the editor all i see is the wireframe of the skybox. 3d textured polygon is enabled. When i compile HL2 quits and goes back to hammer?? Made a new map, and same thing happend. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Did you make it hollow? (Ctrl+h then Phill's '-32' number) I've had the same problem, before, and that solved it.

Dude, no stress. I'm a noob, too, I'm just figuring shit out, as I go... The tutorials page is great, though : www.ubermicro.proboards82.com/index.cgi?board=main&action=display&thread=295[\url]Blackness... Hm. Do you have an 'env_light' or a 'light_environment' in your map? Not sure if that'll fix, or not, but putting the latter in (the 'light_environment'). Put it in, either over 'info_player_deathmatch' (or _start) position, or high up in the center of the map... See if that works... also, when you compile, make sure to check the box that says, "Don't run the game after compiling." For some reason it hangs the ending process up, a little bit. After you compile your map, run HL2DM, 'create server' and - using the drop-down, select the name of your map from the MAP drop-down. Under the GAME tab, scroll down to the bottom and enable flashlights; Flashlights box. Check that box; making sure you know what your flashlight button is (it's 'f' by default), and change it, if need be. Lastly, a few things: Make sure you skybox is sealed and the your terrain goes all the way to your "walls" (the things that keep you from walking out into space. Make sur your box 'encapsulates everything - nothing sticking out of the skybox. Launch

There mustn't be anything outside the skybox or it'll make everything go wrong. Try uploading a picture of the problem to www.imageshack.us . 'hl2 starts then hl2 quits and takes me back to the editor' You need to be more descriptive than that. Does it come up with ERROR? does it just not load up the map? Does it say Client Timed Out?

ant600f2 thanks for your help. It all worked out. I did have the skybox completely around the map. For some reason (noob here lol) i decided to add info_player_ combine and info_player_rebel. As soon as i deleted those entities and added info_player_deathmatch. The map loaded. And yes the video tut's are a geat knowledge base, kudos to SharpS he really knows his stuff.
SharpsS: Yes the map wouldn't load after compile. Is there anyway to get skybox textures from cs into hl2? Would like to get the ones that have the bright blue sky. HL2 doesn't really have them. Thanks to both of you guys for responding much appreciated.

Have you tried making it the normal way? Could be a little bug with the hollow tool, haven't had this problem before though.

I dunno. I'm just going by the tuts - and learnin' as I go (some trial, some error). Lately, thanks to the vids, more of the former than the latter.
++ to SharpS!

It used to happen to me often. I don't know what changed, I have even run levels without a skybox, leaky leaky leaky! It happens less frequently as time goes on... one thing that I found helps was giving HL2 extra time to load (go watch some tv for 10 minutes). Hope you get it right, I hated that too.

Did this ever get fixed/ figured out?
As long as the box is at least as big as the widest/ longest/ tallest part of your map, the '-32' setting should work. That being the case, it'll hollow out to about the same X, Y and Z as the map (or the box's original dimensions; pre-hollow).
