Guys im thinking of buying a server, to place at home, so not hosting one but buying one, but I got some questions: 1. What is a good one? where do I need to look at when I buy one? 2. What does it do with my internet speed on my normal pc? 3. What's the best site to look? Thanks

Check you are capable of hosting a server on your current PC that people can join or its pointless, if you are behind most routers / modems just block all that off and it cant be port forwarded.
It will affect your internet speed, of course it will, and if you have a data allowance then you will need to get a better ISP deal.
Why buy a server? get an old PC running, hook it up, take out all un-necessary power consuming parts, install a low powered PSU (to save electric costs) and you're set.
Good luck!

Good luck setting it up. Servers don't have to be that fast- the reason that all of those websites show off about their quad core ownage servers is due to the fact they're hosting about 10 different games on each one. An old PC will do just fine for most games. Your internet upload speed has to be fast. I'm sure there are special packages you can buy with faster upload. I don't know much about them so I can't help. Professional servers tend to have a 100 mbps connection and are hosted in the major cities. To put things into perspective I tried hosting an Armed Assault game on my 8 Mb connection (Download speed of about 800 kbps, 'normal' upload speed) and my friends get on average 150 ping. And they live in the same town as me. (Not that it effects it much but it rules out one more variable) I know you don't want to, but www.gameservers.com and the like offer very simple deals. Servers for £10 a month may sound more expensive than hosting your own, but they save you so much time and money (electricity and internet bill wise).

Ok, I was thinking of buying one to host a website, because im thinking of making a online text based game. I started to learn php and it goes fast. but I still have a couple of questions: 1. Whats the best site for website hosts? (best quality) 2. Where can I find some harder php tutorials then the beginners, because google is screwed up at my pc somehow :S 3. How do I make a good looking lay out for a site, because I know how to split it up in different tables, but then you only see some squares with text, and that doesn't look good:) Thanks

1) Web hosts... I find weycrest.com very good, lots of nice little extras that others don't seem to give you. Can't believe I bought some hosting for one of my sites (www.ihaveabig.co.uk) and it didn't even include mysql... still, lesson learnt. Weycrest is best so far. 2) Uhh... don't have a clue, www.yahoo.com is always there and www.ask.com ... and www.cuil.com wants your love as well. 3) Tables is the BAD way of making websites! Anybody who does it that way should be ashamed of themselves. It won't work with netscape!... and I too do it that way. www.3kliksphilip.com is a large table, 3 wide and so on. I make them a set width and height for the border, then use a background image that I made with the same dimensions. it's like a jigsaw!

It's a table, each bit of the table having its own background. With a bit of jiggery pokery you can exploit that to make nice borders and stuff. Use your imagination. A bit of trial and error is all that it needs.
