Hey there again, my 'test map' is making nice progress, i'm learning lots of stuff on the way. But I ran into.. well it's not an urgent problem, but I can't seem to find how to place a few objects. I'm trying to label my experiment-areas, and I wanted to place one of those skull-with-bones signs (you see one in Black Mesa East near the entrance to Ravenholm) for a self-terminate button. However, although I could see the texture in the texture browser ( props/signicon002a ), I couldn't find it with my model browser, I couldn't place it with the decal thingey (or ye i could but then the black texture wouldnt vanish and it would be the size of a footbal field). This also applies to the other stuff in 'props/ ' I might be a noob, but I can't see a way to get those things in my map. Not sure if I'm supposed to make a block/brush and then clip it untill the textures fits - this kind of looks unpratical and if not done really well you can still see the 'black parts' (although some blocks with a texture from /props with the black background DO have the black go invisble weird). Anyone has an idea?

Make it an overlay instead.
Pictures would be handy.

Sorry if this is considerd necro, but I could still not figure it out (and I kinda forgot about my map for a while >_>) Anyway, here is an example. It's an overlay, though the same thing appears with a decal. The black square box around the sign won't vanish.

Wait... That's only a small 'X' by 'Y' when you use an overlay, but gargantuan when you use the infodecal??
Uhm... Heh?!?!

As a last resort you could make it a normal block, and use the clipping tool to cut off the black bits.

Well I guess that's the only way then. I was actually hoping someone would have some fix to make the black go away, but meh. Thanks anway

What exactly is the difference between a overlay and a decal? Ive always just used decals because there a little bit easier.

developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Hammer_Decal_ToolAs I understand it, decals are slightly cheaper and easier, but you can change the size of overlays. And you should always use overlays, unless you want to make them disappear or appear for some reason, in which case you use decals.

I totally am giving you karma for that, i had no idea you could resize overlays. I feel stupid now >.>

You can also rotate overlays.
