but there haven't been many on optimization, to help shorten compiling times for that nasty portal flow... I made one, just the basics though www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuw5c6TJQOYIts not very good, I tried to make it simple, thereby not explaining how your surposed to func_detail stuff that doesnt block your vision to other complicated brushes ect.. ect.. Anyway, as for what NOT to put in.3dskyboxes displacements lighting pitch / angle (it confused the crap out of me when I was starting) env_sun and other decorative entities. Dont scare them by making them think that if they make a brush thats not restricted to ^2 the map wont work. What should be covered extensively? The basics ofcourse - making brushes, texturing, the grid views. The good way to make skyboxes (its not that hard...) Sticking to the grid Props - keep it simple. Question: why are you making another begginers tutorial?

Because I've learned a lot since my first tutorials and I really need to put an end to some really simple questions once and for all ('GAME CONFIGURATIONS DON'T EXIST!!!!!')

And how to call a map, look I do know zombie escape is ze_ and zombie is zm_ but where is de_ for etc. go to fpsbanana.com then go to css maps and it gives you the meaning for all the abbreviations. and i saw your tut rusty, i learned with func_detail is really used for, so it helped me

maybe tell them the concept of the different trigger entities and tell them to use common sense when wanting to do something(I.E. use trigger hurt to kill somebody)also tell them to search through these forums for information.

Well you see, I've learnt a lot from the tutorials I have already made and I would like to put that to good use by making a single video which will teach everything. I'm 3 minutes through at the moment As for optimization, it's something that isn't possible with most people who watch tutorials. I know it's harsh on those who are ready to learn, but when you realise that most people don't follow the grid and do some horribly... WRONG things with the carve tool, you just think 'what's the point in a tutorial about something which won't actually benefit them? In short, to make your level optimized, make sure the level is enclosed, put area portal and hint objects over door ways and stuff, make sure that complex areas are seperated, and don't set any of the compile options to fast.

Dont put too much into one beginners guide to maping too much makes it too overwhelming, cover the basics and make more detailed ones as you go on (as youve already been doing SharpS)

I'm just thinking about all those people who just want a single video to teach them the basics. I know it seems as though I've already covered it but the number of messages I get a day indicate I don't

Well when you DO make the video, drill it into them that google does work. Give them an example perhaps.
