If there was to be a video to educate complete newbies into how to map, what should be included? Which aspects of the game?
Imagine if you're just learning to map. You only wan to know the basics. You think you're too clever to need tutorials. All you want is to be shown how to set it up and the basics of the tools. For anything else you can just spam forums because surely nobody else is having the problems that you're having... in short, think like somebody who doesn't know anything about mapping. What should be included?
*Any problems between downloading the Source SDK and getting to the Hammer editor *How to use the block tool *Lighting? *Entities? *How to render, shortcuts *Problems once rendered *Inform them that Google is there for a reason
Anything else?

I agree. People may have an ambition to texture their map entirely with their own textures, but before they can do that they must know how to make a map itself. It's hard not to go off on a tangent when doing a tutorial (OOH if you want bumpy ground do this...) but when you're doing your first map you don't WANT that. You would be happy just to make a house in the middle of a (flat) field. Or even just a flat field.

I think the basic tutorial should include:
-3d navigation and ui -block tool -textures -spawnpoints, phys and static props -2d skybox -maybe tool textures to understand the concept(water as an example)
basically just make a room and put a static prop, a phys prop and an npc in, and then texture it

i mean the 2d x/y, y/z, x/z and 3d windows and how to navigate with them... when i was new to programs like source sdk it looked really confusing to me

u should exclude all the beginner things, there's already a ton of guts on the basics.u should make a tut on things that aren't very common but usefull.
I'd like to see more intermidiate things then beginner.

But that's reversing the point in this UBER tutorial!
Plus more complex things take longer to explain, best to have individual tutorials on them.

oh didn't see that part and ya thats true how it takes longer to explain. i just have trouble following written tutorials (im more of a visual person) the only thing is that i cant think of any basic mapping videos that havent already been made 3dskybox,,lighting,,,2dskybox,,,custom sound and textures,,,soundscapes,,,,arches blocks cylinders,,,,windows dmm windows,,,,and the list keeps going. but there haven't been many on optimization, to help shorten compiling times for that nasty portal flow... ultimate tutorial is a great idea but i don't think it should just repeat what has already been said... don't mean to trash ideas or anything...just stating my opinion, which may be perceived in anyway.
