This thread is about my video card. I am not too computer savvy and would like to know how good my video card is in terms of gaming (playing games like hl2). I would also like to know any cheap ways to upgrade my video card if it isn't already or any other methods which will increase output (I don't want to spend much if any money: cheap I know ;D). Thanks in advance, here is what I'm working with (and please don't laugh if its bad ): Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV version 6.14.10.4342

Google says that's a graphic controller, not a video card, So I am going to just assume that's onboard video, which is a ton slower than installing your own card most of the time, anyways if you have a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot on your mobo, then I suggest you get this www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500080Good bang for the buck, fairly new and good running card for the price, and if you're not sure you have a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot then download www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

What's the rest of your PC? What sort of specification? Go to START, RUN, type DXDIAG and it'll load up all the information. Try to find out your
CPU (Probably Pentium or AMD) RAM (Measured in MB)
...and the motherboard. If you can.
Be wary of buying a high powered graphics card, your power supply in the PC might not be able to handle it.

But for css and hl2 thats wayy to power full.

I suggested that because it's a good bargain, plus if he starts looking into other games that will come in handy, especially as time progresses, it will in the end save you from having to buy another card, whether cheap or expensive, and besides hl2 can't constantly entertain you forever! Unless you have some weird fetish or something If you really don't want to spend a ton, then I guess www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130394&Tpk=8600%20gty would be ok, my 8600 used to be able to max out hl2 and still get a good 70 fps-ish, I haven't been around customizing computers long enough to know which older cards are better or worse......

The Geforce 9800 GT requires an extra power plug thing in the side. I don't know if his PSU would be able to handle it, even if it did have a spare 6 pin power thing available. He may be better off with a less powerful card like the 9600 which I believe doesn't require an extra power THING (I don't know what it's called).
We need to know gmoney's motherboard first, though. He may not even have a PCI 16x slot on it if it's an old PC. He may not have one at all.

I just got a 9600GT a week ago, pretty good card, but it DOES require an extra power plug on the end, 8600's don't (or at least mine didn't), but ya what ever happened to this guy? P.S. If you have or want to get CoD:WaW, don't get a GeForce 9 Series video card, Treyarch was and is still too lazy to make them compatible for each other, I had to disable onboard sound for it to work and I get an error everytime I kill someone in multiplayer (No it's not Punkbuster, I have updated mine twice......)

*slaps* You need to find out what mother board you have OP, It has to have a PCI-E x16 slot if you want to upgrade, and given that you have onboard graphics there's a good chance you don't have one. You dont need a very good card to handle source games. You could get an 8600GT and that would handle it fine. If your looking to play more advanced games like.. crysis, etc, you will want to get something with more kick, maybe an 9800, or an ATI Radeon HD4850/70. Do not get a GeForce 200 series. DO NOT GET A GEFORCE 200 SERIES.

Quite an old PC. Very little ram, the processor is dated...
I suggest getting a new PC for about £300.

Your computer is old. Think of all the components as old grannies with walking sticks, legs tied together in a race. Now, imagine you place a state of the art graphics card in. This would be represented by Barry Scott from the Cillit Bang adverts. No matter how manly and fit he is, it won't help the old grannies to reach the finish line. They will, instead, hold him back, unless he's manly enough to run, dragging them at high speed behind him.
In other words, all of the components in your computer have to be of the same speed or else the faster ones will be limited by the slower ones.
