Alright I am making a awp/raid map, and I want to add the effect of night in it so I made a 3D skybox around the whole map hollowed it out. I haven't put any env_sun or env_enviorment or anything like that in yet. When I go to comiple it does BasePortalVis at a reasonable rate but then the next thing under PortalFlow takes forever I left it over night which was about 10hrs and it was only up to 8, why doesn't it load fast.

Portal Flow works out which areas of your map are visible from where. Set VIS to fast in the compiling options and it'll take far less time.
Also, add lighting to your level. That bit of the compiling is done after the portalflow and is generally far faster. It doesn't, say, slow down to a stop by 4 or anything.

hint brushes will definitely help. You made a 3d skybox around you whole map? I think you're doing it wrong

Sorry what is a hint brush, aslo I wanted it so they are like floating castles so I didn't really want a ground. I do put it on Fast but it doesn't put my water in and the sky box in? Does the sky box have to be touching the level because I just placed it around the castle/map/thingy, I can send you some screen shots if you want.

upload the vmf somewhere like rapidshare and I will have a look to see if you've done anything wrong.
It shouldnt do that.
The skybox shouldnt be touching, check to see that you have no "nodraw" textures going through your skybox, this essentialy makes a leak.

I've had a look at your map.
The water is sticking out of the sky box for a start, that never helps. The long compile time is caused by all the cylinders, either delete them, or try adding them all to a func_detail entity.
Also all those stairs can be added to a func_detail, they will definitely not be helping either.
Try to have as little as posible free space in your skybox, make it as tight as posible, and give any faces which cant be seen in the maps playable area a "nodraw" texture.
That should help, get back to me.

Ok well, its weird now. I deleted one half because I thought "well since i am just going to copy th eother half over ill make the map smaller, so i did that but then when I went to compile it did it fast and i was thinking "Oh goody" but it comipled it with the other half and it didn't change any of the changes I did.
