i have downloaded a texture from cg textures.com (good site) re sized to 512x512,converted to .vtf file with paint.net, used vtf edit to create a .vmt file under options selected surface type, the problem iam having outside it doesn't work(lol)(shows up as pink and black checkerboard in hammer) is the two "tuts" i have been following contradict each other, one says put in a folder in "materials" the other says put in materials/maps folder, does it matter on the folder name eg. "name of map" or just "new textures"? one also says create two .vtf's one and a normal map one. below are the two links, i looked first at the 3k ones but they have been removed Thanks for your time. this one is the best quality www.youtube.com/watch?v=y40UIt5SKqw&feature=relatedthe other one www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTYHYZm_qaEi know i will get it sorted out here

You can make textures work regardless of their location in the materials folder, as long as the corresponding .vmt has the correct file path.
For example, let's say you put texture.vtf in your materials/maps/de_map folder. Your texture.vmt file would read: "LightmappedGeneric" { $basetexture "materials/maps/de_map/texture" } The materials/maps/de_map/texture refers to the file location and name of your texture.vtf file
Regarding normal maps, they are a separate .vtf file that are not necessary to make your custom texture work. However, if you want to use a normal map (let's call it texture_normal.vtf, your texture.vmt file would read: "LightmappedGeneric" { $basetexture "materials/maps/de_map/texture" $normalmap "materials/maps/de_map/texture_normal" }
