Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum, and new to mapping HL2 in general. I've watched lots of good tutorials, but I haven't found a good one on making a crane, like in the original HL2 dock level, which allows you to pick up crates and other metallic objects.
I've found some forum thread about it, but all the screenshots are dead, and it's not very thorough. Can you guys help me?
I managed to add the entity "prop_vehicle_crane", found the model for it, then made the "phys_magnet" entity, but I can't seem to find the model that represents the magnet in HL2.
Can anyone help me with this, also, can someone give any good step/by/step directions? Ive searched youtube, and forums but can't seem to find help on this issue.

I can't do it tonight, but I'll find the vmf for Half Life 2 which includes the crane if you'd like- that way you can modify it and see how it's made.

Thanks Sharps, I figured it out last night, got the crane working in a test level I made. I'll check out the file you linked anyway. but yeah it would look weird. Everyone would stand around watching a team-mate stand near a crane as it operates... hmm... is there a way to maybe make a sort of "remote control" station that would allow some sort of crane operation of a magnet maybe? My idea is to make a last stand, where someone could operate a crane to move debris and clear the way, while other people hold off the zombies. Maybe use some of the debris to kill a few of them... but I'm thinking how that could be implemented without looking strange... i still have yet to look at the included SDK maps that illustrate some of the functions in the editor, like sdk_phys_magnet map... maybe you can just operate it from a terminal Thanks man, Topmo3

Left 4 dead mapping hasnt been done yet, because the full game isnt out But good luck with your crane, SDK better update for left 4 dead..

I like Left 4 Dead, interesting game. Not that fond of the massive hoardes, tends to make the game horribly 'FIRE FIRE FIRE'. The rest of it is very balanced, shame to let everything get destroyed in a couple of seconds of carnage... though with out it the game would be easy.
