I've a 19 inch widescreen

Probably because of slow down. What's the top resolution you have? 1440 x 900?
What sort of frame rate do you ge on your 'normal' and 'maximum' resolutions?

That isn't enough to cause slow down. It'll need to be below 60. Below 30 or 40 is unplayable in a competitive game with flick reflexes. Other games can probably go down to about 20 fps.

The only game I play really competitively is DoD:S and if my FPS drops under 66 I lower my settings.
And it does happen, an ungodly amount of large custom waring maps are unoptimized and DoD:S is running on the ep2 engine.
