I'm addicted.
Indie games! w00t!
Okay I'm going to try and explain how this game works, you start off making an RPG character, and then you are planted right into the middle of a place called caldaria, there are no monsters and shit, this isnt a fantasy game.
And now it gets interesting, you have a campaign map much like the maps in Rome: total war and Medieval 2: total war, you are immediately daunted by the size of this place, you star.t with a little money, and depending on the RPG menu choices maybe some items, like furs if you chose to have a past as a game poacher.
So we've established its like an RPG, but the fun part of this game is you can create large armies like an RTS, join factions and fight for them, then play the battles like in Medieval 2: total war, the gameplay is so fluid!, everything is real time unlike the total war series, after every move you stop and the game is paused, but there is no limit to how far you can travel, just as long as you have enough food and morale for your troops, you can have up to 100 troops per team in a battle with the standard game, which is more than enough when you are right in the middle of the battle, but a mod allows you to have up to 1000 (lag fest).
You mostly fight on horseback if you are like me, and this game has really mastered it, horse archery is a lot of fun in this, and so is charging at someone with a lance or sword.
There is a lot to do in Caldaria, you could besiege a castle, and provided you have some engineering skills attack it with a seige tower!, or you could ambush caravans all day, provided you dont have that damn merchant in your party who seems to have a bit of a breakdown every time I do that.
The game seems to maintain a really strong RPG feel, even without many RPG features, for example to recruit men into your army you visit the villages and recruit them, they start out as really useless, but like you they can level up provided they survive, and generally after a battle or two they advance into and upgraded class, so a "Nord Recruit" would become a "Nord footsman" or a "Nord hunter", you can find companions in taverns of major cities and stuff, provided you can get into them.. (or sneak in).
The game has alot of depth to it, despite its very small install size.
I had an army of about 40 men, good strong men, and this one guy who I thought I could take attacked me, he utterly pwnt me, and somehow everyone in caldaria knew and would tell me about it. I had no good save game so I had to continue playing and raise a new army.
The graphics arent very impressive at all to start off with, but this game is extremely mod freindly, so there is a mod that makes the graphics rival oblivion (almost).
Here are some screenshots I took.
Considering its made by two people, (husband and wife) I am so impressed with this game, Its great that its so mod freindly as well, there is already a large modding community.
Words cant really describe how much fun I'm having with this game, so check it out for yourself, its a small download, and you can play for free until you get to level 7 I think, which does take a long time..
