Hi claudia, nice to see a girl around here.
your problem is not with your textures, its with your camera, theres an easy fix. click on the words in the top left corner of the 3d camera box and select "textured", then you should be able to see the textures on your block.
hope this helps.

Ah, geez. Here we go with the pissing contest.
The easiest way to do it is pretty much the way that most often you see it:
Select the texture you want (you can browse them and fine-tune the selection(s) by typing in the gist of what you're looking for), then - with that texture having been selected, create your thing (Box, rectangle, sphere, cone, etc.) After you have the X, Y and Z sizing down, just hit 'Enter' and it'll create the thing with said texture already applied.
The HARDER way is to just slap some generic 'ol texture to it, then apply the texture you want to only the SIDE that you want (which, of course, won't work on a sphere or cone, but, HEY! ya can't winnem all.)
Hope this answers your question.
(Don't mind the rest of the boys, they don't get out, much and are too caught up with their dangly bits.)
Mappy Happing!
