L4D Cave/Mine Level

Alrighty guys,
It's been on the cards a while, but i've always wanted to make a cave/mine level for L4D, as part of a series a friend and i were making.
I was hoping for some inputs/ideas from you creative lot, as that's always my weakest area.
Currently the plan is:
Theme of level before: Woods.
Survivors leave the safe room.
Survivors somehow fall into a cave. (Mostly dark, occasional natural lighting)
Survivors transverse the cave and eventually break into a mine. (Becoming more and more structured, some lighting.)
Survivors follow rail tracks in the mine to the outside.
Theme of level after: Quarry.
My major problems are:
1) How to get all the survivors together before 'falling' into the cave.
This is important for they all need to fall at once, together, into the mine. So there needs to be a reason for them all to be in one location. This generally means a vehicle of some sort they all need to be in.
I've though of a small hand-powered train they climb on and use, but the breaks don't work and they end up going off rail into the cave.
I've thought about an elevator which drops through the floor of a shaft and into a cave area below a building.
Any other ideas would be great here.
2) A Crescendo in the middle of the level.
I've thought of explosives they find in the mine to clear a path through a fallen blockade. The bang of course causes a lot of zombies to come.
I've thought about a Power Generator they have to start, which is quite loud. This powers a mine-shaft elevator they have to wait for.
Any other ideas, tips, tricks, etc for this sort of map would be great.
