I didn't know how to word this better, but some times when using Hammer it'll go wrong and you won't be able to select anything. It'll be a bit like it is in Camera mode, letting you drag the view around but you won't be able to do anything else.
Tends to happen after using Youtube fullscreen for me. It only happens if Hammer is minimised / not used for a while, normally if you're looking up information on youtube for it. I've had similar problems on Multimedia Fusion and COnstruct, two completely different games that have the same drag problem. I'm using XP. Does anybody get the problem with Vista?
EDIT BY ZEPH: Solution: Press 'Z'. 'Z' toggles "Mouse Navigation" on, which is like holding spacebar!

I do, similarly, but I hit 'Esc' a couple of times and that rectifies the problem, for me. The inverse to that problem is not being able to move the 3D map around after resizing an object. Different problem, same solution.

I think I found a workaround for this extremely annoying bug. Go to task manager (ctrl alt delete) and click on hammer.exe in the processes tab, then click end process. Just make sure your map is open and when you load up hammer again load the last saved file and you can now select things! Another way is when you open your map simply compile it, exit out on the game your playing and you might be able to select things again.

^^^ bit risky tbh
normally if it crashed i wouldnt advice doing any ctrl alt del options unless youve saved the map pretty recently.... erm with vista i know if u click on red cross and it says windows bla hblah is encontering problem i always click on wait for a respond or something last button and that rebooots the load part of it. and works then save... and carry on.

I think if your going to follow my advice but not save your map beforehand theres some questioning coming in about your genetic code.

lol that's very interesting, I was about to ask this...
very frustrating, sometimes for me it fixes when I restart hammer, sometimes when I restart steam, but it always fixes when I restart the computer. but thats just a pain, i've been trying to figure out another way, I think when I clicked the one of the buttons under "Select: " on the right side of the screen, it allowed me to click again.
I need to test it again to make sure it always works though, I just clicked on "solids" and it was working again
unrelated, but I have a random question.. how can I select a group of brushes all at once? I don't mean with shift click... I have a spiral staircase made of about 200 pieces and I need to select it all at once :\

Drag with the selection tool to create a box around the stair case then press enter.

I haven't had this problem recently, perhaps it only happens on Windows XP SP3? (And Vista).
I'm using SP2 at the moment because AOE2 works with it.
Also, it's not just limited to Hammer, it happens to other programs as well, like MMF2 and Construct.

Try this: View>center 3d view on selection, try it once/twice or more if you need it. It works for me, I don't know if it works for you guys but I hope it does!

I get it too occasionally.
Most problems with Hammer can be solved by saving and reloading the map, or if hat doesn't do it, restart Hammer.

I know this is an old topic, but I get this too. I've only noticed it a couple of times after using youtube fullscreen (youtube seems to be loading without cascading style sheets recently, so i have to use fullscreen to view videos bigger than an inch square). After pressing the space bar a couple of times it seemed to work again, but I restarted just in case. I thought that my space bar had got stuck at first. lol

Z Toggles mouse look ("noclip") navigation mode.
Think this it it, it locks you to mouse look mode in 3D view. Press 'z'!
Well dug up.

This happens to me at Windows 7. Its frustrating, and it just... happens. Normally after watching a Philip tutorial ( ) to get to know stuff I can add to my map.

Used to happen to me quite a bit, then I just discoveed that Z was a problem, but now I use Z so much I can't live without it:p
But when it happened to me it was not enough with closing the map, nor with closing hammer. I had to restart my whole compuer. Sometimes It would happene the first time I launched hammer. Itwas quite annoying. I guess thee is really no turn around, Use Z like Zeph said, I dont know if compiling works, enver tried it.
